ad valorem tax

DEFINITION: Ad valorem is a Latin phrase meaning “according to value.” An ad valorem tax is imposed on the basis of the assessed value (the dollar value assigned for tax purposes) of the item being taxed. The most common ad valorem tax is the municipal property tax assessed on the real estate of property owners, but it may also be levied on other property that is owned, such as cars and recreational vehicles.
